I looked at Wikibooks, which I thought was particularly interesting. This project was for creating textbooks and annotated texts. I found a page called IB English which was created to assist highschool students in the IB (International Baccalaureate) program in preparing for the IB tests at the end of the year. These tests are similar to AP tests, but they are a little more involved. I was in this program in highschool it was intense. The IB English test has one part where you have to complete an oral analysis of a poem. This site on Wikibooks helps students prepare for that commentary. I think this page prepares them for a written commentary, however when I was in the program we had to comment on a poem orally. I think this is a good resource for students, however I think they need to be careful taking too much advice from this page because it may not be completely accurate.
I also looked at wiki-how which provides how-to guides on a variety of topics. I think that is a good site because you can learn how to do a variety of things. However, since anyone can edit that site there may not be expert advice so people need to be careful taking that to literally. One example of this they give is the page how to stop cutting yourself because this is not written by an expert psychologist or psychiatrist so it may not be the most reliable advice and people that need help like that should consult a professional.

At first I thought it was strange that someone posted a wiki-how on how to stop cutting yourself but I bet that it may get a lot of hits. You bring up a good point, that if the wrong information is put out there, especially on a topic like this, something bad could happen.
ReplyDeleteWrong information, right information... in situations like cutting yourself, who really understands that? I have a relative who cut herself repeatedly about a year ago. What she said to me was that that was the only time she felt like she was in control of her life. To me, that was irony amplified, because she wss very out-of-control. I would surmise that the bulk of people who cut themselves seek attention OR use the pain from the cutting verify that they still feel. Bottom line, I'm glad she stopped cutting herself. Too often, though, as a society we don't like to talk about things that make us uncomfortable. As though the behavior in question won't happen if we ignore it...
ReplyDeleteWhen I'm struggling with something of significance, I remind myself that I am creating my reality with my thoughts, actions, reactions, intentions, and words. That doesn't mean I always can turn things around quickly, but I have the means to choose how I react.
Interesting side-bar...back to work on the assignments due. Reading and reviewing your work. finishing mine. Starting on the capstone...
To quote Willy Wonka: "So much time and so little to do. Wait a minute. Strike that. Reverse it." (No, I can't always cite the quotes I want...google search helped! But I do think that way - either a line from a movie or a phrase from a song. Drives my friends crazy when I get on a kick and my brain's doing that in full force for an evening. Song snippets for everything! Like I said, one of my best friends says "The world is not ready for you on caffeine!"....
back to work.
